CUBOS-lite Shape Sorter
I absolutely love handmade Montessori friendly materials, so I have to tell you about this beautiful new CUBOS-lite shape sorter that we were given to test by Anson Wong, designer and owner of CUBOS.
We have several other shape sorters, but this is by far my favorite because it can be used independently by the child. When my son was using other brands of sorters, he always needed my help to unload the sorter and get it set up to use again. Frequently, he just lost interest after he couldn’t get the shapes back out independently. By the time he was able to use them independently, he was too old for shape sorting. The lid of CUBOS can easily be opened by small hands, allowing for truly independent play! This feature gives a variety of ways to play with it as well. Marley is a bit young for a shape sorter (at 10 months) but loves exploring the wooden shapes and loading and unloading them into the sorter.
At this point, I have offered her the cylinder and the cube to insert into the sorter, with the corresponding side face up as an object permanence material. She has loved putting the shape in and then shaking it around to hear it rattle around inside. I love watching her discover that even though the shape has disappeared, it is still in the box.
One last feature that is wonderful, is that only the corresponding shape can fit in the hole designed for it. This is a wonderful control of error and is not always the case with other sorters we have used.
It was handcrafted in Canada, using gorgeous hardwood and sealed with beeswax. This is truly an heirloom material. If you would like to purchase your own CUBOS-lite head over to the Kickstarter campaign and support this beautiful product. We are thrilled to have one on our shelves!
