Our Favorite Books
At 14 months, Camden's attention span is long enough to really get into books! He has always loved them, but he takes a much greater interest these days by pointing out tiny details in the illustrations and even saying words before I get to them!
When I chose books for Camden, I always try to chose books that are beautifully illustrated with an engaging story. I try to find books that have the most realistic drawings possible and especially love books that have real photographs. Camden notices tiny details in the images and I feel it serves him best to have the books directly reflect the world he is learning about.
In our downstairs play area, I have a bookshelf that displays all of the books facing outward (thanks Grandma!). Before we got this bookshelf, we struggled with Camden pulling books off of a standard shelf and dumping them on the ground. This little guy knows what he wants and he would pull books off until he found the one he wanted!
It was a clear demonstration how important it is to have a prepared environment. We were both feeling frustrated by our initial organization; he was frustrated because he couldn't find the book he wanted and I was frustrated by the mess! One of my biggest goals as a parent is to correct issues like this before I start to feel angry about his behavior (like book dumping.) Now that the covers face outward, he is able to directly select the books that he is interested in. When we first got the shelf, I would help him carry the books back to the shelf. He quickly picked up on it and now mostly puts them away unprompted. It was an easy solution that allowed us both to enjoy reading together even more!
Here are a few of the books that he is particularly enjoying these days:
All the World is a beautifully illustrated book with a lovely poem to accompany it. It has many levels of interest, taking us inside many different areas of the world inside.
We can not get enough of Where Do I Sleep? It has realistic illustrations of animals found right here in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunshine and Moonlight are two books that Camden has really been enjoying recently. They follow a little girl and her family in the morning and in the evening. These books only have illustrations, so I have found that it is very easy to make up my own stories. Camden has a especially enjoyed the illustrations of the little girl changing to get ready for school in the morning. I noticed he was very focused on these images both shortly before he started trying to take off his own shirt and pants.
Everywhere Babies is a wonderful book about babies and common events in their days. Camden especially loves pointing out the different features on the babies faces.
I am proud to say that Camden's favorite book right now is one that was written by me! I will post more about this personalized book later, but Camden loves looking at pictures of himself and the people he loves the most.
